The College of Agriculture holds a workshop on the Red Palm Weevil. Professor Dr. Amer Jasim Abbas delivered a lecture during the workshop, covering the identification of the most significant damages caused by the weevil, which is a dangerous pest affecting palm orchards. Upon its entry into the country, it could lead to significant damages due to its feeding habits within the palm stems. The workshop also highlighted essential methods for prevention, control, and the reproduction cycle of the weevil, along with the optimal timing for pest control.

As part of the university’s productive initiative, the College of Agriculture has started planting green peppers and eggplants for the autumn season under the conditions of the plastic greenhouses belonging to the college. The Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Hakeem Sultan Abdul Rikabi, stated that the college’s administration is working to overcome all obstacles facing the greenhouse operations, commending the efforts of the college’s staff. He added that these products are sold at affordable prices to the college and university staff. Dr. Naseer Faheem Al-Zamili, the Administrative Assistant overseeing the plastic greenhouses, highlighted that the produced crops are characterized by high yield and good quality.

As part of the research monitoring program for postgraduate students in the Department of Soil Science and Water Resources at the College of Agriculture, the committee conducted a field visit to fulfill the requirements of the Master’s thesis for student Hussein Saeed Hussein. The thesis is titled “Fertility Evaluation of Wheat Cultivated Areas in Some Regions of Wasit Province Using Geomechanical Techniques.” The supervision is led by Assistant Professor Dr. Kherman Hussein Habeib, with consultation from Professor Dr. Hashim Haneen of the University of Maysan.The work locations established by the Geographic Information System (GBS) include the areas of Al-Aziziya, Al-Nu’maniya, and Al-Ahrar. regions, detailed morphological descriptions were conducted, and soil samples were collected for necessary laboratory analysis. The committee noted some observations for the student to enhance the research outcomes.
