The Soil and Water Resources Department was established concurrently with the founding of the College of Agriculture in 2008. The department plays a distinct role as a specialization in soil science, particularly after significant transformations in the agricultural sector. This includes a focus on reclaiming saline soils, a cornerstone for agricultural development in Iraq. The importance of water specialization became evident amid a genuine water crisis caused by decreasing levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, exacerbated by climate change affecting water resources, including decreased precipitation.

Department Objectives:

The department aims to prepare and graduate specialized agricultural professionals in the field of soil and water sciences. This is achieved by providing them with agricultural sciences related to soil and water in various precise specialties, such as soil physics, soil chemistry, soil biology, fertility, fertilization, irrigation, and drainage.

The department addresses all aspects of soil and water management, with a focus on practical aspects. This involves training students in conducting various analyses related to soil, water, and plants in the college laboratories, as well as conducting field visits to irrigation, reclamation projects, and other agricultural projects in the province.
