The College of Agriculture at Wasit University discussed a master’s thesis titled “Assessment of Risks Resulting from the Oasis Oil Company in Soil, Water, and Plant Pollution.” The thesis, presented by researcher Noor Hamdan Jarallah, aimed to evaluate the soil surrounding the Oasis oil field for heavy elements such as lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, cobalt, and mercury. The concentrations were described using pollution indicators like pollution factor, pollution load index, and nutritional enrichment factor. The study also determined the levels and concentrations of these elements in water and plants surrounding the field.
Results indicated elevated total concentrations of lead, cadmium, nickel, and chromium in the soil, exceeding globally allowed limits, except for mercury, which was within permissible limits. The study found that both plants and water around the field exceeded international limits for heavy elements, along with increased pollution indices.
The study recommends avoiding settlement in areas near the field and implementing modern and effective treatments for emitted gases containing heavy elements.

Assistant Professor Hassanein Taher Karim from the Department of Plant Protection at the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Wasit, participated in the examination committee for the doctoral thesis of Hamza Abbas Yasser Sultan from the University of Wasit / College of Science. The thesis focused on the compatibility between entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernema sp) and the fungus (Beauveria bassiana) in controlling the peach fruit fly (Bactrocera zonata). The discussion enriched the scientific knowledge with valuable and insightful information. The thesis recommended the use of biopesticides instead of chemical ones, as they demonstrated excellent and sustainable results in environmental insect control.
